BARDON CONCRETE CLIMBS A MOUNTAIN TO GET CONCRETE TO CONISTON
Aggregate Industries’ ready-mixed concrete business, Bardon Concrete, has been working from its Barrow-in-Furness plant with the GallifordTry / Costain / WS Atkins Joint Venture Company (GCAJV) to improve the treatment of drinking water supplied to Coniston village in Cumbria. The upgrade project involves the construction of a filter membrane building on behalf of United Utilities, who manage and operate the distribution of energy, water and wastewater throughout the north west of England.
This particular scheme is unique in that the site is located part way up one of the Lake District’s well known mountains. The site, which is accessible only by a very steep and winding un-made road through a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is located on the flanks of The Old Man of Coniston, adjacent to the ancient Coniston Copper Mines. Bardon Concrete’s Territory Sales Manager, Harry Poxon, was asked by GCAJV to look at the possibility of delivering hundreds of cubic metres of ready-mixed concrete to the project.
Harry said: “We conducted a detailed survey of the access road and formed a plan of supply prior to committing ourselves to this job. We were confident that we could offer our customer the high level of service they required and had to take into consideration high environmental sensitivity and public health and safety in our plans. The site is located in a beautiful area, which is frequented by large numbers of fell walkers.
Over five hundred cubic metres of concrete were needed for the job, the majority of which was poured at a rate of fifty to seventy cubic metres per day. The exception was the roof structure, which took over one hundred cubic metres. After discussing delivery options with the client, it was decided that the best approach was to reduce the amount of concrete that was carried in each delivery, hence reducing the weight of the trucks and eliminating any chance of spillage.”
Simon Maxwell, Site Agent for GCAJV, said: “The contract was potentially a logistical nightmare; however it was completed successfully as a result of a great team effort. The planning was meticulous throughout and Bardon Concrete’s plant staff and drivers excelled in their efforts, not only to help complete the job, but also to protect the local environment.”
